Welcome to our Year 3 Page
Friday 29th November 2023
We have been very creative and musical recently. In Art last week, we made our own cave paintings, using different mediums such as charcoal and paint. We also discovered how these were made in the Stone Age period. Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed this topic.
In English, we have loved reading, ‘The Mousehole Cat’. Our current target is to use apostrophes to show possession, e.g. ‘Mowzer’s kittens had all grown-up and stayed at home.’ We have all worked hard to predict and write our own endings to this Cornish tale. We will begin to use descriptive language to write a character description next week.
We were delighted to learn some new songs with Becky Chevis from Gloucestershire Academy of Music and spend time with residents at Chestnut Grove Care Home again. The children thoroughly enjoyed singing and listening to the life experiences of residents.
We have also considered the role of a School Councillor in our PSHE lessons and children had the opportunity to apply for this exciting role. All children voted and we now have two new School Council members in Year 3! They are both looking forward to this opportunity.
Finally, in Geography, we have been finding out about the United Kingdom and locating various capital cities of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Children have developed their atlas skills and have learnt how to use the index.
We hope you have a restful weekend.

Children enjoyed a wonderful Forest School session this week. We observed and discussed seasonal changes we might hear, feel and see. We collected an assortment of leaves and made a rainbow of the variety of colours. We ended our session with shelter building, playing in the mud kitchen and making leaf rubbings.
We have also developed our research skills in History. Children have discovered lots of facts about Skara Brae, which is one of Britain’s most fascinating prehistoric villages. We used the internet and watched various video clips to explore this stone-built Neolithic settlement in Scotland.
In Science, we have been investigating water transportation in plants. In class, our celery stem absorbed a lot of the blue food colouring. The blue water was transported to the top of the stem and this enabled us to see the xylem (tiny tubes inside the stem) really well. Some children were even inspired to try out and adapt the experiment at home! We are looking forward to more Science experiments this term!
Finally, we enjoyed learning about The King’s Speech and discovered some of what happens at the historic State Opening of Parliament. We also paused to think about Remembrance Day and the significance of the poppy around the UK.
Have a lovely weekend everyone!

We’ve had a great few weeks in Year 3. In Maths, we have continued mastering our understanding of place value and used it to solve different problems. We have added and subtracted multiples of ten and 100 to three-digit numbers. Children have used key mathematical vocabulary to describe what happens to the digits in each number.
In PE, we enjoyed team basketball games to develop our dribbling and defending skills further.
Our visit to St James Church for a Harvest experience was lovely. Reverend Mark led an wonderful service for us which included listening to a hopeful Bible story and singing joyful Harvest songs.
We especially loved smelling some lavender and throwing this into the air!
Another highlight was an incredible visit from Cain and his assistant Helen. They represented Racing through Barriers of Disability. Cain raised awareness of his cerebral palsy and inspired everyone to show more resilience. We tried to write to with our feet and Mrs Pearson was fed yoghurt by one of the pupils. We had a thoughtful discussion about other disabilities and the different barriers faced in everyday tasks.
Best wishes for the weekend.

Year 3 have enjoyed their learning over the past few weeks. In Literacy, we have practised our new target, using commas in a list. We focused our writing on our class text, ‘Leon and the Place Between.’ Children created character descriptions of Abdul Kazam, an intriguing magician. We detailed his appearance, personality and listed his incredible tricks! The writing effort was fantastic!
In Maths, we have continued mastering our understanding of place value and using it to solve problems using number lines. We have also calculated the previous and next multiples of ten and 100 of three-digit numbers. Children have used key mathematical vocabulary to describe what happens to the digits in each number.
In History, we have been researching what people ate during the three periods of time within the Stone Age. Children loved finding out how their human ancestors had to hunt and search for food. Surprisingly, there are still some foods eaten today. We all felt very hungry at the end of this lesson!
Finally, we’ve developed our basketball and football skills. The children had great fun working in teams and practising their dribbling skills!

What a fantastic start to Year 3! The children have settled into their new classroom and are showing a great attitude to our new Key Stage 2 routines. There have been so many WOW moments and it has been great to see everyone playing outside, especially on the Trim Trail!
In Literacy, we enjoyed a fabulous virtual visit with over 300 schools with the award-winning author SF Said. There was a such great buzz in the classroom and discussion around books. He helped everyone understand how resilience can help to achieve dreams. We have also started to use ‘a’ and ‘an’ correctly before a noun, e.g. ‘an elegant ballerina,’ ‘an enormous ocean.’
We have continued to learn about place value of two and three-digit numbers in Maths. We are becoming very confident at explaining the value of each digit in these numbers and how to write three-digit numbers in words.
Your child may have come home singing ‘What a Wonderful World’ as we used this to explore the RE question: ‘What do Christians learn from the Creation story. We created fantastic visualisations about all that is wonderful in the world, before reading the start of Genesis in our Children’s Bible.
Our exciting Stone Age History topic has started. We have loved reading lots of related non-fiction texts, such as on Stonehenge and created detailed woolly mammoth drawings during an Art activity. We also have many questions for our Science ‘Plants topic.
Our PE days will be a Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure that PE kits are in school all week. Also, can all children please bring in a drinks bottle which is clearly labelled. As we are a Healthy School, children are encouraged to bring in fruit for snack time if they would like to.
We have a ‘Meet the Teacher’ gathering next Tuesday after school. If you can make it, it would be lovely to meet you.
We are very excited about the year ahead. Thank you for your support.
Best wishes for the weekend.
