Welcome to our Year 4 Class Page

Friday 19th April 2024

We had a great time revealing the results from our science experiment this morning.

We dunked 5 hard boiled eggs into 5 different liquids to see the impact they have on the enamel of our teeth (hard boiled eggs have the same consistency).

We took out the eggs today and looked, smelt and felt them to help us draw conclusions. The vinegar removed the hard shell and the coke dyed the egg brown. Whereas water, milk and orange juice had little impact on the egg.

Here are some pics!

What a fab start to Summer term! I have been so impressed with Year 4’s enthusiasm to learn and attitude towards their work this week.

We have dived head-first into our decimal’s topic- learning the value of tenths and hundredths and counting up and down in hundredths. We have also continued practicing our times tables and they are coming along brilliantly!

In English we have started our new book… How to Train Your Dragon and the children are loving it! We started by finding a note from Hiccup which explained that dragons are disappearing and asked questions about the characters as well as made predications. We since have read on quite considerably and have practiced writing sentences in both past and present tense.

In RE, we have learnt the story of the Pentecost and enjoyed moving around the classroom annotating images that portray the story – adding questions, likes, dislikes and reflecting on emotions of characters.

We look forward to starting some more of our new topics next week!

Who knew time could fly this fast – I cannot believe we are at the end of January already!

Year 4 have dived head first into History lessons, learning about who the Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from and what they were like. The class loved having the opportunity to act out the story of Beowulf and understand the beliefs the Anglo-Saxons had. Now, we have started to learn about the Vikings, using our inference skills to pick apart what happened during the Lindisfarne raid and how the Vikings invaded Britain.

We have been enjoying our PE lessons – with an alternating focus of football and gymnastics. In football we have been developing our kicking and dribbling skills which is a lot harder then the professionals make it look! In gymnastics we have been making shapes with our bodies, practicing different balances, travelling in different ways on beams and mastering a variety of jumps.

Electricity is our main topic in science this term. The children particularly enjoyed learning how to create a circuit – experimenting with putting the equipment together and then learning how to draw it effectively in our books.

What an incredible first week of 2024! We have hit the ground running, learning all sorts of fantastic and interesting topics!

In Literacy we have really enjoyed the start of our class book: The Boy at the Back of Class. We dived into thinking about what it must be like to be new in a school and learnt what a refugee is. We have secured the skill to use a range of pronouns and nouns to make our writing more cohesive, interesting and less repetitive and have enjoyed producing effective dialogue in narrative writing.

In maths we have officially mastered our 11 and 12 times-tables and cannot wait to play fun times-tables games in the future to secure our knowledge and quicken recall!

In Science, we have had our first look at a circuit and developed our knowledge on the difference between a device that is battery-powered and main-powered.

Year 4 have worked exceptionally hard this week across all subjects.

In English we have not only been using our new skill – fronted adverbials of manner and place – but actually learnt how to up-level these to make our writing even better! I was so pleased that they were up for the challenge and cannot wait to see these techniques used in their writing going forward!

In Science, we thought about sound and asked reflective questions based on the interesting topic that we will be studying this term – in hope we may be able to answer some by the end of the unit!

We have practiced using our Discussion Guidelines in RE, Class Worship and Guided Reading to enhance oracy in the classroom and practice asking questions that help conversations to develop.
In the following week we will all be taking part in a forest school session and cannot wait to get stuck in to a range of exciting activities!

Wow what a wonderful term it has been!

We have written an alternative ending to the Iron Man in our Big Write which has been full of creativity, imagination and incredible skills learnt across the weeks.

We have undergone several science experiments which have taught us about the different states of matter, how a material can change from one state to another and the temperatures these can occur at.

Year 4 have particularly enjoyed our Roman topic where we have analysed the tablets found in Hadrian’s Wall, used an array of sources to understand more about the Celts and next week complete the topic by unpicking how the Romans influenced Britain.

Our Art has been inspired by our book: The Iron man. Shading and cross stitching has been our main focus in which we have used to shade different images from our book and alternative ending.

We all look forward to our next half term where we will start our new book… Kensuke’s Kingdom.

Please check back on Monday for some photos!

What a wonderful September!

The children have dug deeper into the story of the Iron man by reflecting on the feelings of Hogarth and expressing these in a letter. They have included prepositions in thoughtful descriptions to explain where the iron man is laid in a scrap yard. I very much look forward to unveiling the next part of the story..

The children have been incredibly excited about a science experiment that we have been carrying out all week. The children were split into two groups and each group put 2 beakers of 300ml of water in another class room. They put 1 of their beakers by the door and the other by the radiator. Each day they have measured the level of water in each beaker and recorded the data in a group table. We are all looking forward to evaluating the results in our Science lesson on Monday.

The children have been showing excellent team work in PSHE where they have explored how we communicate and react to other people and have demonstrated excellent subject knowledge in History. We look forward to enquiring more about how the Roman’s used to live.

What a fabulous first two weeks of Year 4 we’ve had!

We have been thoroughly enjoying our class book: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and have used what we have unveiled to spark our imagination in Guided Reading and Literacy lessons. So far we have already used expanded nouns phrases to write an accurate character description of the Iron Man and have begun to describe the coastline where he fell apart!

In Maths, we have been focusing on the value of each digit in 4-digit numbers and have practiced writing these large numbers in words.

In Science, we have been thinking about States of Matter – solids, liquids and gases and worked out that a human comprises of all three states! We have observed what makes something a solid, a liquid and a gas. We have also investigated whether gas has weight by weighing an inflated balloon and comparing it to a deflated balloon.

After such a great start to the year, I can’t wait to see what this year will bring.
