Friday 14th July
Week 6 complete! Wow – how time flies when you are having fun!
This week was full of fun and a little anxiety when we met our new teacher. However, the children came back full of joy and excited for Year 2.
This week in Literacy, we have finished our recount about Sports Day. The children have managed to remember all of the wonderful things that happened at each activity. They have used adjectives and verbs in their sentences whilst remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Next week, the children will be writing a recount about our trip to Westonbirt, completely independently.
In Maths, we have been focusing on capacity. We know that capacity is how much something can hold. We have compared different containers and made estimates about which one we think will hold the most water. The children were really good at using what they already knew to make a sensible estimation. The have also completed their final ‘remember its’ on everything we have learnt this term and again they have blown my socks off!
In RE, we have discussed good reasons why everyone (religious and non-religious) should care for others and look after the natural world. The children were able to share their own thoughts and feelings about this. They came up with such wonderful ideas about things that they could do but also it doesn’t matter if you are religious or not – we should all look after the world.
In DT, we have completed our bridges project. To make our bridges successful, we followed these criteria; the bridge must hold Milo’s weight, it must be wide enough for Milo to lie on, it stays up on its own, it must stretch across the water. Once we had tested the bridges, we evaluated them to see what we would do differently next time. It was fascinating to see all the different creations and I hope you enjoy them at home, too.
We finished the week with a lovely session at Forest School. Lots of exploring and some tasty toasted marshmallows.
Next week, we have a jam-packed week. We are going on our school trip to Westonbirt Arboretum and to complete our Young Leader Award, we will be visiting Chestnut Court.
Enjoy your weekend!

Friday 30th June
The end of June – I cannot believe it!
Firstly, I want to thank those of you able to attend Sports Day and our Violin Performance. I really hope you enjoyed them as much as we did and thank you for your support! What a brilliant way to end Enrichment week.
To kick of Enrichment Week, we took part in the London Sinfonietta concert where London Sinfonietta musicians and presenter Patrick Bailey explored how to compose and create new music. It was very interactive and we learnt a new song as a whole school!
On Tuesday, we had an orienteering challenge to complete. The teachers had hidden questions around the playground and we had to work in teams to crack the code. It was wonderful to see Year 1 and Year 2 working together so happily.
“Sports day was the best day ever,” said Year 1A (and that’s not because Miss Williams told them to say it). We took part in the races, yoga, Dinomania (we got to smell dinosaur poo!), benchball and rounders. It was a jam-packed day but the children loved it and worked so hard.
Our violin performance was a real showcase of what we have learnt in our violin lessons this term. I definitely think we have some keen and able violinist in Year 1.
We will be taking part in our ‘Beep Beep Day’ next Thursday (6th July). More information will come out about this.
3 weeks to go!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 23rd June
This week started with us thinking about Refugees. We all took part in the Great Big Assembly which was a special, national assembly for World Refugee Day. We were able to ask lots of questions and they spoke to people live in a refugee camp. It was very inspirational and really got us all thinking about how we can help refugees.
In Maths, we have been focusing on money! We are now able to recognise and know the value of the 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins. The children have really enjoyed describing and comparing the coins. We have been playing a guessing game by describing the coin and seeing if people can guess what it is. We are very good at this now. The children have been able to show that 5 1p coins is the same as 5p and 5 2p coins is the same as 10p. Very practical lessons where we are learning life skills, too.
In Science, we have continued to investigate different leaves and tried to match them to their tree. We are definitely getting better at this. We looked through a magnify glass to see the detail of each leaf really closely and drew what we could see. Next week, we are going to put all of our learning together and look at the structure of a plant.
In RE, we have continued to focus on our key question, ‘How should we care for others and the world?’. We have still been focusing on Christianity and Judaism. This week, we have learnt the story of The Good Samaritan. We have discussed how we should make sure we treat others how we want to be treated not like in the story. Doctor Barnardo was a Christian who decided many years ago that he would help children in need – we have been learning all about the things that he did.
We thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Sports for Schools event. We were very tired after our sponsored fitness activity but learnt lots about Jack Rutter’s life. We discussed how Jack spoke about all of our school values and how they have helped him to become successful.
4 weeks to go!
Happy weekend!
Miss Williams
Friday 16th June
Wow, it’s hot but we are loving eating our lunch outside and playing on the field.
I am incredibly proud of how enthusiastic they have been with the Phonics Screening. I actually think they were so confident they thought it was just a fun activity.
In Literacy, we have written our very own poem. The first poem we have EVER written and they are amazing! The children have been able to use their senses to describe our time at Forest School. Some children wrote, ‘I can feel the breeze across my face’ and ‘I can hear the noisy children exploring Forest School’. They have come such a long way with their writing and they are all able to use all the skills taught, this year, in any piece of writing that I ask them to do. We have performed our poems to the rest of the class.
In Reading, we have been reading a non-fiction book called ‘A Week at the Coast’. The children were able to re-call all of the activities that the little girl did when she was at the coast. They were asking questions about the text and they were able to tell me about a time when they have been to the coast.
In Maths, we are continuing to focus on multiplication and division. Particularly looking at dividing into equal groups and grouping into equal groups. The children have been brilliant at using jottings to show their workings out, as sometimes it is a lot easier to understand when you draw it. I feel most children are now confident in counting in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s – even working out which numbers are missing in the number sequence.
In PSHE, we have been discussing our school values and how school helps us to feel safe and happy. The children’s thoughts have been really comforting and they are able to speak at length at how much they enjoy school and understand how the school’s values will help them in life.
This week, the children came home with their sponsor form for the Sports for Schools event next week.
Enjoy the sunshine.
Miss Williams
Friday 9th June
Week one complete! Only 6 to go.
Another jam-packed week helped by the sunshine (that only appears in the afternoon).
We have been so lucky this week to have John join us from Victim Support. He read a story he has written called Hedgehog Finds Her Voice. We then talked about what good listening means and people we can talk to if we are worried about something.
In Literacy this week, we have been focusing on poetry. We have read some lovely poems together and looked at the features. We have learnt a poem about walking through the woodland. There is so much wonderful language in the poem so we have learnt lots of new and exciting words. The children have been to Forest school to describe our own woodland so that we can write our own poems.
Maths has been incredibly exciting this week as we have started learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Thank you for helping the children to begin learning to count in 2s, over the holiday. It has been really evident since they have been back at school. We have also used prior knowledge to double and halve numbers to 20. The children remembered this from our fractions learning in the Spring term. If we know that double 4 is 8 then half of 8 is 4. Next week, we will be exploring multiplication and division.
In Science, we have been trying to identify trees by looking at their size, shape and their bark. We explored our school grounds and did some beautiful bark rubbings. The children came up with wonderful vocabulary to describe the bark including, rough, bumpy and jagged. We are definitely getting better at identifying different plants and trees.
In Art, we started the design process of our masterpieces. Mrs Manns gave us a piece of Styrofoam and we used a pencil to engrave the pattern we had created in our art book. I cannot wait to see how they turn out when we print them.
This term, we will continue with our Young leaders Award. This week, we have been looking at perseverance or Percy’s-ears (which helps us remember it). The children discussed things that have had to preserve at including, riding a bike, reading and swimming. We have been thinking really hard about what our action project can be which will help our local community. Any ideas welcome!
Next week, we will be doing the Phonics Screening Check.
Enjoy your weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 26th May
What a week – from assessments to designing our own gardens to practising the violin. So many different yet wonderful activities. As always, the children have worked so hard on their assessments and I am really proud of what they have achieved.
This week, we have used our digital writing skills, that we have learnt in Computing, to type a letter to Kasulu Primary School, our partner school in Tanzania. First, the children planned what they wanted to write by organising their ideas into 6 boxes, one about their selves and the others about things we do in school. They worked with their learning partner to type out their letter which have been printed and sent to Kasulu Primary School. Finally, we talked about the similarities and differences between the schools.
In Science, we were focusing on flowers. We looked at a range of different flowers, some that are wild and some are not. The children chose their favourite flower and discussed why they had chosen it. Then, we watched a video all about the wonderful flowers and plants in Mrs Manns’ garden. The children used all of this information to design their own garden. Some children had a patio with a chair and table and other children had an apple tree as they wanted to watch it grow. They were fantastic to look at!
In PE, we perfected all the skills, we have learnt this term, by playing a game of cricket/rounders. At first, it was tricky to understand how to play but by the end the children were working as a team to collect the ball and get it back in the bucket before the other team ran back to their space.
In DT, we have started the design process. The children have been set a challenge to design, make and evaluate a bridge that will help milo to cross the river. The children have designed 4 different bridges and discussed which materials they will need to make it. I cannot wait to see which design they chose to make.
After half term, we will be getting ready for the Phonics Screening Check which begins on Monday 12th June. We would be really grateful if you could continue to read with your child daily and practise their phonics sounds.
I hope you enjoy a lovely, sunny week!
Miss Williams
Friday 12th May
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who came to our WOW assembly. I am sure you will agree, the children did amazingly! They spoke with such confidence and really made it their own.
This week in Maths, we have learnt how to tell the time to the hour and half past. The children have grasped this concept so quickly and are able to work independently to draw the hands, in the correct place, on a clock. We have been stopping the children and asking them to tell us the time at different parts of the day. They do find telling the time to half past a little trickier as the hour hand has to be in between the 2 numbers e.g. if it is half past 1, the hour hand would be in between 1 and 2. I would be really grateful If you could support the children to consolidate their learning this week.
In Literacy, we have written our very own story, using the Three Billy Goats Gruff text, to help us structure the story. Their imaginations are inspiring and they have been able to create really wonderful stories. Next week, the children will be completing their Big Write, which is where they write completely independently, to see if they can remember all the skills taught so far, this term.
In PE, we have been improving our cricket skills. This week, we have focused on balling the ball to the bat and hitting the ball, accurately. I was so impressed with how much the children improved from the beginning of the session to the end.
In Art, we have continued to explore Henri Matisse’s art work. This week, we have been looking at patterns in the environment. It was fascinating to see what the children has spotted all around us.
Don’t forget – next week is ‘Walk to School Week’. As a class, we will be working together to see how many times we can walk, cycle, or scoot to school.
Have a wonderful weekend!
2 weeks to go.
Miss Williams
Friday 5th May
A four-day week only means one thing – more work to fit in to less time! However, as always, the children have rose to the challenge and worked really hard.
In Maths this week, we have started our time unit. We kicked this off by looking at the days of the week, months of the year and how we use this information to create a date. The children were able to apply their knowledge to put the information in the correct order and answer questions e.g. which month is before or after September? Next week, we will be learning how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour – this is tricky!
In Literacy, we have started to plan our own stories inspired by The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have discussed using adjectives to make our writing more interesting. The children have thought of 2 animal characters, one animal has a problem because of the other animal. Their ideas have blown me away. One child has used a hedgehog and a fox. The hedgehog wants to get to the other side of the path for the juicy bugs; however, the fox won’t let him past. The hedgehog will roll himself into a ball and roll to the other side of the path but the fox can’t stop him because he is too spikey. WOW!
In RE, we are still focusing on our key question, ‘Who is Jewish and how do they live?’. This week, we have been exploring Chanukah. We have looked at different objects that Jewish people may use to celebrate Chanukah. The children have all asked a question about what they would like to find out more about. We will answer these questions next week.
In PE, we have been continuing to use all taught skills in cricket including, rolling the ball, hitting the ball and saving the ball from hitting the wicket. The children are brilliant at listening to advice from our coaches to make their throw or hit more accurate. As always, the children show sportsmanship to one another.
The most exciting thing to happen this year has finally happened. We have started our Violin lessons! The children have been asking me about learning the violin all year and their excitement did not disappoint. Most children are able to hold the violin correctly and begin to pluck the strings to the beat. We cannot wait for you to see what we have learnt, later on this year.
We are working extremely hard to practise our WOW assembly for you to see on Thursday 11th May at 9.20am. We hope you can make it to see all the wonderful things we have learnt this year.
Enjoy the celebrations.
Miss Williams
Friday 28th April
We have had such a busy and exciting start to the Summer term. It would be lovely if the weather could show more signs of Spring that we know so well!
We have kicked off our Maths learning with another addition and subtraction unit of work. The children are expected to add two numbers (less than 20) together and subtract a single digit number from a two-digit number (less than 20) both bridging 10. The children have so many strategies that they can confidently use to solve these number sentences. The tricky part of learning, this week, is remembering that when we subtract a number the answer is always SMALLER than the number you start with. Next week, we will begin to learn how to tell the time to the hour.
In Literacy, we have learnt so many new skills. First, we learnt how to make a singular noun, a plural noun but there were so many rules. The children loved trying to work our whether the noun needed just a ‘s’ or ‘es’ to make it plural. After this, we explored prefixes and suffixes e.g., ‘un’, ‘ing’, ‘ed’ ‘er’ and ‘est’. We use these words so much in our writing that the children were really confident at adding the suffixes to the root word to make new word e.g., paint – painted.
In reading, we have been learning The Three Billy Goats Gruff story off-by-heart. The children can now re-tell the whole story with actions and it is wonderful to listen to. In the coming weeks, we will be using this to support us when writing our own narrative.
In History, we have started our new unit – ‘The Great Fire of London’. I am hoping the children have told you all about it as we have learnt so much already. The children couldn’t believe it happened such a long time ago and that they didn’t have fire engines like we do now. We have been putting the events in order to create our own timeline of what happened.
It was such a pleasure to watch the children in Forest School. They always show our school values, but particularly when at Forest School, as they have to work together to solve real life problems and make sure they are being responsible around the fire. We even enjoyed some marshmallows!
Enjoy your weekend.

Friday 31st March
And we’re done! What a busy and exciting week we have had for the final week of the Spring Term.
We started our week in a very musical fashion with the String Quartet concert followed by our iRockers showing us all of the skills they have learnt during their iRock sessions.
On Tuesday, we had Jenny, from the Synagogue in Cheltenham, zoom in to tell us all about Judaism. She showed us around the Synagogue and talked about all of the special objects that Jewish people use. She also talked about the different ways that Jewish people show their faith, including the Shabbat celebration. Finally, she allowed the children to ask her any questions they had been pondering and WOW, the questions were so interesting and even made Jenny think carefully.
We finished our Science unit, ‘Seasons’ by going on our Spring Walk in the local area. We used the same route as we had been on for the Winter Walk to see if we could spot any differences between the seasons. It was a very wet and windy walk but we did see flowers starting to grow and new leaves growing on the trees.
In Geography, we used all of our learning this term to create our own map of the school. We had to think really hard about where things were in comparison to others e.g. the MUGA is next to the pirate ship. After that, we all completed the quiz about our four countries and their capital cities.
This week, we have completed lots and lots of assessments to see how much we have learnt this term. I cannot describe how proud I am of every single one of them for how much progress they have made! They definitely deserve a break!
I hope you all wonderful Easter and look forward to seeing you in the Summer Term!
Thank you for all you support, as always!
Miss Williams
Friday 24th March
This week we were consolidating everything we have learnt so far this term!
In maths, we continued to look at quarters of an object and an amount. The children have really grappled with this to understand the difference between quarters and halves. At the end of the week, we started the position and direction unit. We have learnt lots of new vocabulary and been able to use it in our maths work to describe the position of objects e.g., on top of, in the middle, above and below.
In our reading sessions, we have been reading the story ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. The children had to read the statements and work out whether they were true or false from what they know about the story. There were some very interesting discussions. This linked on to our learning in PSHE, as we were talking about when we have lost things in our own lives. The children were able to express how they feel when they lose something or if things change (including moving home, losing toys, pets or friends).
In Music, we learnt a new song called ‘Upside down’. We discussed that the song has a different pulse and beat between the verse and the chorus. The children were given an instrument to see if they could find the pulse and sing the song at the same time. It was wonderful!
In PE, we have been using our skills from music (finding the pulse and beat) to learn a new dance. Megan, our new dance teacher, has taught us a dance to The Family Madrigal from Encanto. The trickiest thing is remembering all of the moves. Next week, we will have learnt the final part and then we will be ready to put it all together.
We are incredibly proud of the children’s oracy skills this week. On Friday, we performed a presentation, to the whole school, about what we had learnt about in Science week. The children learned their lines off by heart and were able to speak clearly and confidently.
One week to go!
Have a restful weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 17th March
It’s Science Week and what a fascinating week it has been!
This week, we have taken part in so many wonderful activities including; a talk from Phil Ahmet (a Radiation Protection Advisor), a seabins workshop, Severn Trent assembly and Ben from Dyson came back to test our STEM skills. The children have shown such determination and team work when making their boats with Ben. I am really proud of them all.
In maths, we have started our Fractions unit of work where we have been finding one half of shapes, objects and amounts. In order to remember how to find one half, we learnt a song ‘when finding one half, the whole is divided into two equal parts (please ask the children to show their actions to this). I was flabbergasted at how quickly the children have grasped this concept and have been able to use facts they already know e.g. I know that 4 + 4 make 8 so half of 8 is 4.
In Literacy, we have been writing our very own non-chronological reports about an animal. We have included a title, introduction and sub-headings. It really is wonderful to see the children writing independently, using all of the skills taught so far this year.
As we love Science so much, we have been observing and describing weather associated with Spring. We took a thermometer outside to check what the temperature was at different times of the day and then we used some bubbles to see how windy it was (we had to score it from 1 -5). Finally, we found out about the names of the different clouds and tried to see if we could spot them in the sky!
In RE, we have learnt all about the Jewish celebration, Shabbat. We looked at lots of objects and food that Jewish people have when celebrating Shabbat. We even got to try some Challah bread! We discussed the importance of Shabbat for Jewish people and linked this to our own celebrations.
Have a lovely weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 10th March
What a wet week it has been but it hasn’t stopped us from working hard and learning lots!
In Maths this week, we have come to the end of our addition and subtraction unit by partitioning 19 and 20. The children are able to partition the number, write the numbers correctly in a part-part whole and then write the number sentences from that. They are able to talk about their learning confidently and independently. I am so proud of how far they have come during this unit of work.
In Literacy, we have identified the features of a non-chronological report using our ‘All about Tigers’ text and many more. The children are able to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction texts and discuss the differences. We have used out ‘All about Tigers’ text to plan our own non-chronological report about an animal of our choice. Next week, we will be using our plan to structure our writing. Our focus for our writing this week is making sure we ALWAYS use a capital letter at the beginning of every sentence and include the joins we have learnt in handwriting.
In reading, we have been reading the ‘Lion and the Mouse’ which links to our animal unit in Science and our non-chronological report in Literacy. The children have been using the text to answer the questions (this is a tricky skill) and I must say they are very good at it!
In RE, we looked at the question ‘what is the Mezuzah and what is inside it?’. Miss Williams brought a Mezuzah to school for us to look at and when we opened it, we realised it had a special scroll with the Shema prayer on it. This is really important to Jewish people as it reminds them of their special prayer, ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one’. The children then created their own Mezuzah using an envelope and wrote words that are special to them on a scroll.
In Geography, we have been looking at the human and physical features in our surrounding areas. On Thursday, we tried to answer the question, ‘do we have more human or physical features around our school?’. The children worked together by taking a walk around the school grounds and spotting the different features. One of the children said, “we are very lucky to have so many physical features around us like the forest!”
In art, we have been focusing on weaving. First, we discussed where weaving has come from and why. Then, we searched the classroom for items that have been woven -we were surprised with how many we found! The children had a go at paper weaving which was a little tricky as you have to make sure you cut the paper correctly. Finally, we had a go at weaving using string and a weaving board. The children created some wonderful patterns. We will continue to discover more in the coming weeks!
Fingers crossed for a drier weekend!
Enjoy.
Miss Williams
Friday 3rd March
Welcome back!
We have hit the ground running this week (as always). The children have come back with a ‘can do’ attitude and it is really noticeable how much they have been reading at home and practising their sounds. Again, thank you for your ongoing support with this.
What a joy it was to see all of the children in their ‘comfies’, learning about new authors and reading new books, on World Book Day. We heard from Michael Morpurgo, who talked about his new book ‘Jemima The Pig and the 127 Acorns’. He gave us advice and ideas on how to start writing a story. Don’t forget – with the World Book Day voucher, the children can go to any shop and buy the book they want (they don’t need any money).
In maths, we are going to be completing the exploration of the numbers to 20. This week, we have looked at 17 and 18. We couldn’t believe how much the children have remembered and most children were able to complete their do it and twist it, completely independently. Our next step is to make sure the children are able to remember these facts without using the multilink.
In RE, we have started our new unit ‘Who is Jewish and how do they live?’ We have discussed special objects that we have at home and why they are special to us. Then, we did a ‘through the keyhole’ activity where we looked at objects that are special to Jewish people. The children asked so many thought-provoking questions about these objects and hopefully we will be able to answer those questions as the term progresses.
Hello March! This term, we will be discovering all of the wonderful things about Spring. We have already been talking about how the weather is sometimes different every day – it can be very confusing sometimes. At the end of the term, we will be going on a Spring Walk to see how our local environment has changed from Winter to Spring.
Enjoy your weekend!
Miss Williams
Friday 17th February
What a wonderful week we have had – the sun has been shining and we all made our very own healthy sandwich!
In DT, we were assigned a project to make our own healthy sandwich. We started by exploring where bread comes from and then we sorted foods in to healthy and unhealthy. First, we designed our sandwich by thinking about what we were going to put in it. Then, we used our understanding of instructions to write a set of instructions to follow. Finally, we evaluated the taste and look of the sandwiches. I think the children did amazingly to follow their own instructions and make a delicious healthy sandwich. Now, we know they can make their very own lunch!
In History, we concluded our ‘What is an explorer?’ unit by discussing was Christopher Columbus a good or a bad person. The children have written some very thoughtful sentences about their own point of view and listened to what others thought. It has been wonderful to listen to the children’s understanding of history and how it has impacted how we live today.
In Science, we used the pictures of our pets to describe and explore the structure of common animals. From this, we recorded data in a chart to show how many different types of animals we had in Year 1 and their common features.
Each week, we have continued to take part in the Young Leaders Award. We have begun to understand what kindness looks like especially when someone isn’t watching e.g., putting a special card in someone’s pocket without them seeing. The children are beginning to understand what is required of them to be a good leader.
I am so proud of all of the progress the children have made this term and I know this will continue next term.
Thank you for your continued support!
Have a wonderful half term.
Miss Williams
Friday 10th February
This week, we celebrated Safer Internet Day and Mental Health Week! The children have contributed their wonderful thoughts and ideas whilst exploring how others think and feel.
In Maths, we have moved from looking at length to looking at height. We knew that length is how long something is so height must be how tall something is. The children are brilliant at making sure all of the heights start in the same place so that we can spot which one is taller and which one is shorter. There has been lots of vocabulary to use in these lessons and the children have been encouraged to speak in full stem sentences e.g. line A is taller than line B.
Literacy has been all about being bossy! This week, we are focusing on instructional writing using imperative verbs or some may say ‘bossy’ verbs. The children have worked together to put a set of instructions about making a sandwich, back in the right order, as Miss Williams dropped them all over the floor. Next week, we will be writing our own set of instructions and following them to see if we can make our very own sandwich.
In History, the children have loved learning all about Christopher Columbus. We used our Pirate Ship (trim trail) to role-play his 4 voyages. The children were so good at acting out what might have happened on those ships. We also talked about the things Columbus brought back with him including, pineapples, potatoes and gold. This week, we have looked at Columbus’ timeline, all the things he achieved and didn’t achieved. From everything we have learnt so far, the children have been asking, ‘Is Columbus a good person or a bad person?’ – what a good question!
We have started benchmarking the children to see if they are ready to progress to the next reading books. We are really impressed with how well they have all done and thank you for all of your support with their reading.
I look forward to seeing you all for our parents’ meetings, next week!
Have a lovely weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 3rd February
This week has been full of new learning and understanding.
In Maths, we have started our Measurement unit where we are focusing on length. The children grappled with the idea of what length was and how it helps us in life. We worked out that a length is how long something is which is different to the height of something. So, we decided to see who was the longest person in our class – it was lots of fun! Then, we looked at measuring the length of objects using the multi-link. We have discussed the word centimetres, as in our reading session, we found out that the longest snail in the world is 30cm! Maths is all around!
Literacy has been so exciting this week as we are writing our very own narratives, using The Snail and the Whale story structure. The children have planned their own story by thinking of two different animals and a setting where those animals live, they have thought of a problem for one animal and how that problem is going to be solved. It is wonderful to see the children’s writing coming to life and all of the taught skills are becoming more visible in their writing. We cannot wait to share these stories with you.
Our handwriting has improved so much over the last few weeks that we have started learning how to join certain letters e.g. il and ti. The most important part is that we start every letter on the line. I am so proud of the children’s progress.
In PE, we have been putting all of our football skills that we have learnt this term into practise, by playing in small football matches. It was wonderful to see the children controlling the ball with their feet (and sometimes their hands) and working together as a team. On Friday, we took part in the Chance to Shine Cricket session where Alex talked to us about the All Stars Cricket club and taught us some basic cricket skills. We had heaps of fun!
In RE, we have been looking at the four types of prayers in Christianity. The children were able to discuss where some of these prayers may be used in the parable of The Lost Son. They then went on to write a prayer that a 6-year-old Christian may say when in church.
Thank you for your on-going support with everything!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 27th January
Firstly, I would like to thank you for your support with the children’s Oracy activity. The children spoke confidently and enthusiastically because of this.
This week, in maths, we have finished exploring numbers to 20. We have been able to use our number knowledge to solve tricky word problems. We talked about effective strategies we could use to solve these problems and the children came up with, our brain (very important), our fingers, multi-link or drawings. It is really important the children understand the concept of the word problem so that they understand what they are being asked to do. We have done lots of discussion around this.
In our reading sessions, we have been exploring a very interesting page from The Snail and the Whale. We have discussed lots of high-level vocabulary and began to understand why authors write stories in certain ways. Also, we are now able to re-tell the whole of The Snail and the Whale story! I’m sure the children would love to show you.
In History, we have learnt so many facts about Christopher Columbus, I am surprised the children can remember them all! We play a true or false game and wrote down our favourite fact about his life. Lots of tricky information to understand but the children worked very hard.
In Computing, we have been using Beebots to understand how to program a robot. I have never seen the children so enthusiastic about a piece of technology. They were able to work with their learning partner, to move the Beebot forwards, backwards, right and left. Next week, we will be putting these skills into practise when we create a sequence of movements.
In RE, we have discussed what Christians learn from the parable of The Lost Son. The children were able to link the understanding of forgiveness and talk about time where they have been forgiven and when they have forgiven someone else. Very thoughtful discussions, happening!
Have a restful weekend.

Friday 20th January
I am so proud of all of the children in Year 1A, as this week was the first week the children took the responsibility of changing their own reading books. All children were able to put their books back in the right place and choose 3 new books that they wanted to read. Not only is this very responsible – it allows the children to choose books they are curious to read.
In Literacy, we have moved from learning about adjectives to nouns. A noun is a place, person or thing. We use these all the time in our conversations and writing and we are now able to identify them and know their name. We have also learnt that ‘I’ is a pronoun which sometimes replaces the noun. All of these skills are crucial to make our writing even better.
Our Snail and the Whale text map is well underway and the children are able to re-tell the first part of the story using our Talk for Writing actions. Please ask the children to re-tell the story to you – it really is lovely to watch!
In PSHE, we have been looking at human and animal life cycles. We were blown away with how much the children already knew and most children were able to draw an animal’s life cycle. We discussed what happens when things grow and change.
In RE, we continued to recognise the link with the parable ‘The Lost Son’ and the Christian idea of God as a forgiving father. The children worked in groups to act out the parable and then we used a ‘hot seating’ approach to explore the differing perspectives and feelings of the father and sons. We discussed the ‘I wonder’ questions – What might this parable teach Christians about God? Is God like a father? And how?
This week, we have started our new History unit, ‘What is an explorer?’ It was fascinating listening to the children share their ideas with one another. Here are a few examples: An explorer is… someone who goes to places that are called adventures, explorers go to different places and people who go and find out about animals.
Enjoy your weekend.

Friday 13th January
This week, we have been focusing on our discussion guidelines; particularly looking at the person talking and listening carefully. The children are becoming more focused and are able to repeat what their learning partner has said which is a very important skill.
In Maths, we have continued to partition and find addition and subtraction facts for numbers to 20. This week was all about 12 and 13. The children have a really secure knowledge of these numbers and are now starting to spot patterns in the number system.
In Literacy, we have started to learn ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson, off-by-heart, using our story map. This will help us to understand the structure of simple stories e.g. beginning, middle and end. We have learnt what an adjective is (an adjective is a describing word – it brings things to life). We have been using adjectives to write interesting sentences about the characters in The Snail and the Whale story – using adjectives makes them even more interesting.
In Science, the aliens had landed and they have left us a task. They are trying to find out about humans and other animals on our planet. We are going to be spending the next few weeks finding out as much as we can so that we can help them. We discussed what all animals have in common and found out that humans are animals, too – we move, eat, grow, breathe etc. Finally, we drew an outline of a human body and labelled the main parts. We will use this as a way of telling the aliens what the functions of these body parts are.
In RE, we have started our new unit ‘What do Christians think God is like?’. We discussed that the bible is a key way of finding out what they think God is like. We read the parable of The Lost Son and acted it out to begin to understand how this story is significant to Christians. We also know that parables are special stories that Jesus told to help people understand.
In PSHE, we have used the NSPCC pants rule to understand how to keep ourselves safe. Ask the children all about the Pantosaurus Song – they love it.
Fingers crossed for a dry weekend.

Friday 6th January
Happy New Year! I hope you were all able to have fun and rest during the festive period.
We have hit the ground running this week in Year 1, and the children have been fantastic. We have been fortunate enough to welcome two new members of staff into our Year 1 team. A huge welcome to Mrs Collis-Pritchard and Miss Nicholas.
In maths, we started our new unit on numbers 11-16. This week, we have focused on the number 11 by first partitioning the number and then finding the addition and subtraction facts. The children were able to pick this skill up easily from our previous learning and work independently, using the multi-link.
The children were incredibly excited for our first Literacy lesson this term, as we have started using our small-lined literacy books (very grown up!). They all rose to the challenge and were able to keep their writing small, but not too small, all the letters were sitting on the line and there were finger spaces between each word. You wouldn’t believe the progress!
We had a wonderful time on our Winter Walk to kick off our new Science unit – Animals including humans. The children were able to spot the signs of winter in our local area, identify different animals and discover their habitats.
During Art, this week, we experimented with the primary colours. First, we made sure we knew the names of the colours and then we started mixing the colours together to see what other wonderful colours we could make. The children used some expressive language to describe their new colours. (Sorry, if any paint came home on T-shirts!)
What a wonderful way to start the year – I feel very lucky.
Enjoy your weekend.

Friday 16th December
What a wonderful week we have had!
Firstly, I would like to say a huge well done to all of the children as they have worked so hard this term. I am so proud of all that they have achieved.
It was kicked off with the snow – we had the best time playing in the snow with our friends and making snowman/snow volcanoes.
In Collective Worship, we have thought about what we hope for ourselves and others for 2023. The children have written their hopes on a postcard which will be displayed in Gloucester Cathedral.
This week has been one of my favourites. We have been in full Christmas spirit. We thoroughly enjoyed our party day and the children looked amazing in their party clothes! We played lots of party games and the children showed off their dance moves. The children have also made some special Christmas crafts for the family to enjoy.
We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and cannot wait to see you in the New Year.
Miss Williams
Friday 9th December
We really hoped you enjoyed our Nativity. We are so proud of what the children have achieved and they have loved being able to perform to an audience. I think we may have some stars in the making! Thank you for joining us!
This week, in maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We know that a 3D shapes is a solid shape. We have learnt all about a cuboid, cube, pyramid and sphere. The children were fantastic at spotting 3D shapes around the classroom. Some children even spotted some, in the playground, at lunchtime.
All children have finished their Big Writes and I am amazed at the progress they have made. This is their second completely independent piece of writing and most children were using all the skills we have learnt, this term. What a brilliant way to end the term!
In Art, we have been using clay to create 3D shapes, linking with our learning in maths. We have used tools to create interesting patterns. We hope you enjoy our creations.
This week, we were fortunate enough to be able to go to our local church, where Reverend Mark demonstrated what happens at a Christian Baptism. We explored the different areas of the church and sang a hymn. This links with our learning in RE, where we have been focusing on the similarities and differences in Christian Baptism and A Muslim Naming Ceremony. The children are able to talk confidently about the Muslim ceremony ‘Aqiqah‘ which celebrates the birth of a baby and draw on similarities and difference between both religions.
We ended our brilliant week at Forest School. It is always so lovely to see the children showing all of our school values at Forest School even when things are tricky (and cold!).
Have a lovely weekend.
Only 15 more sleeps…
Miss Williams
Friday 2nd December
I cannot believe we are in December already. In Year 1, we have had a very special visitor this week. I’m sure the children have told you all about Alfred, our Elf.
In Literacy, we have been focusing on letter writing. We have discussed why and who we might send a letter to and then looked at the key features e.g., an address, date and who it’s from. The children received a letter from Alfred on Thursday so they have written a letter back to him using all of the skills taught this term; including answering and writing their own questions. These skills will support the children next week when we write a letter to Father Christmas for our Big Write.
In History, we have been exploring how boats have changed over time. We know that Gloucester Docks was a very important place, in the olden days, for boats to be able to buy and sell goods. We have looked at similarities and differences in boats, over the years. We will be using this knowledge in DT where we will design our own boat for our moving picture.
In Music, we have been focusing on the key question, ‘How does music tell stories about the past?’. This week, we were finding and keeping a steady beat, using long and short rhythmic patterns and high and low melodic patterns. We used the musical instruments to keep a steady beat for everyone to follow.
In PSHE, we have talked about the importance of ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’, how diseases can spread and simple strategies for preventing diseases from spreading. The children have design very eye-catching posters to remind others of this important message.
We cannot wait for you all to join us on Tuesday 6th December at 9.45 for our nativity, Baarmy Bethlehem.
Take care,
Miss Williams
Friday 25th November
Week 4 – wow, times flies when you’re having fun! Fun is a good way to describe this week.
This week, we have been practising our nativity and it is sounding great. We cannot wait for you to see it!
Maths has been all about part-part wholes, this week. We have been partitioning 7, 8 and 9 and finding all of their addition and subtraction number sentences. We have been using the multi-link to support our learning e.g. if we had 8 multilink and we partitioned it into 2 parts, there would be 3 multi-link in one part and 5 multi-link in the other so 5 + 3 = 8 and 8 – 5 = 3.
Our daily lives are full of questions and this week, in Literacy, we have learnt how to use a question mark. We realised that a question mark has a full stop at the bottom of it so that means it goes at the end of the sentence. We have linked out literacy writing to our core text, ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs by asking lots of thought-provoking questions. For example, ‘Why doesn’t the book have any words?’
In PE, we have started our netball unit. We have learnt how to stop quickly and pivot on one foot. From this, we practised a chest pass and bounce pass to our partner. We were really impressed with the children’s hand-eye coordination and the way they used the skills and techniques from our basketball sessions.
Last week, in RE, we looked at how Christians show love and this week we have been focusing on how Muslims show love. We talked about one of the five pillars of Islam ‘Zakah’, where adults give some of their earnings to charity. We realised that lots of religious and non-religious communities show love in the very same way.
Please can we remind you that all Nativity costumes need to be in school by Monday 28th November. Please do speak to us, if you have any questions about your child’s costume.
Have a fabulous weekend!
Miss Williams
Friday 18th November
What a wonderful week we have had in Year 1.
The highlight of the week has to be attending ‘The Really Wild Reading Festival’. We met Hannah Shaw, who is an author and illustrator. She talked to us about how she became a writer and that she had to keep practising to get better. Also, she taught us how to draw a badger and a slug from her book, ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’. The children represented the school brilliantly despite the long walk and the rain – we are really proud of them.
In Literacy, we have written a recount about our time at The Really Wild Reading Festival by using time connectives first, next, then and finally. It is really important that the children can accurately recall real life experiences whilst using all the skills taught so far e.g. capital letters and full stops. In handwriting, we have been encouraging the children to ‘shrink their writing’ and they are doing so well. It would be great if they could continue to practise this at home.
In RE, we have continued to focus on our key question ‘What does it mean to belong to a faith community?’ We have a good understanding of Christian and Muslims symbols which show they belong to their faith. This week, we have discussed that loving others is important in lots of communities. The children were brilliant at talking about ways they show love to others and how Jesus taught about loving other people. We read the parable ‘The Lost Coin’ to understand how Christians are taught that they should love each other and love everybody.
In DT, we have started our Mechanisms unit – ‘Designing, making and evaluating a moving picture canal boat’. I have been blown away with the children’s enthusiasm to have a go at creating their own levers, only using paper. Some children have gone as far as making their own levers at home to practise the skill – this is the learning we love! This week, we have started to design our background picture for our moving canal boat.
I just wanted to say a huge well done to all of the children that have been in the Regular Reader pot – every week this number increases and we can really see the improvement in the children’s reading.
Thank you for your continued support.
Miss Williams
Friday 11th November
This week has been very special as we have now elected our new school councillors. What a big responsibility!
In Maths this week, it has been all about number lines. This is an incredibly tricky concept for children of this age to understand but as always, they smashed it. On Monday, we made a giant number, using the number cards. The children worked out that all the numbers with a 4 at the beginning go together and the 4 represents 40. We have even started to look at trickier number lines that go from 40 – 60 – most of the children have been able to work out which numbers would go in between.
In Phonics, we have now learnt all of the split digraphs e.g., a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e. The split digraphs are in so many words that we use and we will be encouraging the children to use them in their writing. This week, we have sent home the sounds and their rhyme for the children to practise. They absolutely love saying the rhyme and it really helps them to embed the sound into their long-term memory.
In Science, we have started our new topic Seasonal Changes. We first looked at different types of weather then we put the Months of the Year in the correct order. After that, we matched the weather types to the months of the year to analysis what happens across the year. Next week, we will be observing changes in Autumn.
This week was the start of our History topic – Glorious Gloucester. We have begun by understanding that things happened a long, long time ago. This concept is tricky for children of this age so we used our History display to visualise how long ago some of these events took place. Next week, we will be focusing on the history of Gloucester Docks.
It’s that time of year – it’s time for the Nativity! This week, we have started to learn our songs and lines for our Nativity ‘Baarmy Bethlehem’. A letter has been sent home with your child’s lines and costume ideas. We cannot wait to share it with you.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember keep reading!
Miss Williams
Friday 4th November
It has been so lovely to be back with the children, again. I do hope you all had a wonderful half term and I have loved hearing about all of the things the children got up to.
In Maths, we have started our new unit of work – place value of numbers to 100. The children were so excited about this as they have been desperate to look at bigger numbers. I love their enthusiasm. We have been counting backwards and forwards from any number. It would be great if you could continue to practise this at home; often the children get muddled when it gets to the next 10s number. By exploring the structure of these bigger numbers, we have used the base 10 equipment. The children are becoming more and more confident at using this equipment to show numbers to 100 e.g. 34 has 3 tens and 4 ones.
In literacy, we have been consolidating our understanding of capital letters and full stop. The more we write, the better we become at making sure our sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Our writing has been linked to bonfire night– we have found out where the celebration comes from and how to stay safe on bonfire night. When you are reading with the children, it would be great if they can spot the full stops and capital letters.
In PSHE, we asked ourselves the question – ‘How are we listening?’. After a lengthy and wonderful discussion, we came up with simple strategies for resolving conflict situations by listening and communicating effectively. We also had a go at giving positive feedback to our learning partner and describing how it made us feel.
This week, in RE, we have been looking at our new question, ‘What does it mean to belong to a faith community?’. The two words we have been unpicking are: faith and community. We have discussed that a community is a group of people with something in common and identified communities that we belong to. Next week, we will start to understand the Christian community by looking at their religious symbols and how they belong to their faith community. On Friday, we met a swallow named Sparkle. Sparkle has travelled around the world and visited lots of Christian churches. We read his story and decided to look at Christianity in Spain. We looked at lots of different pictures of the La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona as a way of beginning to explore the Christian faith through the eyes of the worldwide church.
Have a restful weekend! Hopefully it isn’t too wet.

Thursday 20th October
We’ve made it! Our first 7 weeks in Year 1 and we have achieved so much!
The children are remarkable. They understand the expectation of being in Year 1 and work their socks off every single day. We all follow our school routines so well and often someone will tell me if we have forgotten to do something.
This week, we have completed our first Big Write in Year 1. The children have re-written the Gingerbread Man story, independently. I am so pleased with the outcome and have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them.
In maths, we have explored addition and subtraction word problems. We have used equipment and pictures to help us to solve the problems. We have also used part-part wholes, to prove we have the correct answer. The children have completed a short assessment to see how much they have learnt this term. Again, I am so pleased with what they are able to do.
This week, we have been scientists! The children set up their very own experiment to test which objects would float and which would sink. The children were able to make a prediction, using prior knowledge.
Another busy week and a lot of tired children (and teachers).
Please encourage the children to read over the holidays, as much as they can. They have spelling and maths homework to complete, too.
Thank you for your continued support!
Miss Williams
Friday 14th October
This week has been busy but wonderful.
In Maths, we have continued to focus on 2D shapes. We have learnt that a triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners. We have been so grown up and learnt to use a ruler to draw our 2D shapes, accurately. We looked at the similarities and differences between all of the shapes. In the latter part of the week, we started our addition and subtraction unit by focusing on adding and subtracting 1 from any number up to 20.
In Phonics, we have now learnt 12 new sounds altogether. The children really flourish in phonics lessons and are excited to see what our next sound will be. We have noticed that lots of sounds, sound the same but are written differently. The children are encouraged to use a sound mat when writing to check which sounds they think is in a certain word e.g., play or plai.
In RE, we have discussed how Christians look after God’s world. The children came up with such thoughtful answers and have challenged themselves to see if they can look after our local environment by picking up litter and planting trees and flowers.
On Thursday, we had a visitor to talk to us about the all of the work Young Gloucestershire have been doing alongside the Canal River Trust collecting and analysing data from the very first Seabin in the Gloucester Docks! There are 1 of 15 Seabins in the UK on our very doorstep! It was fascinating!
Four more days to go!
Enjoy the weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 7th October
I cannot believe we are in out 5th week of the Autumn term – time flies when you are having fun!
Thank you for your support at our Harvest Service. It was wonderful to have so many volunteers walking to and from the church so thank you.
This week in maths, we have started our Geometry unit. The children have great prior knowledge of 2D shapes but sometimes get a triangle and square muddled up. To help us learn the properties of the shapes, we have made up our own songs. If you ask the children, ‘what is a 2D shape?’ they will be able to share our song with you.
In Literacy, we have been focusing on writing full sentences. The children have written about our trip to the church for the Harvest Service. It is really important that the children can read what they have written once they are finished so this week we have been writing and then reading our work to the class. I often ask the children, ‘does that make sense?’. Handwriting has been a really big focus this week. We have continued to practise our pre-cursive writing by ‘whooshing’ off the line. Please can you encourage the children to form the letters correctly when writing at home.
In Geography, we have been looking at human and physical features. The children were brilliant at sorting the pictures into the correct category. Next week, we will be looking at human and physical features in our local area.
This week has been the first time we have used our sketch books! Our sketch books give the children the opportunity to practise a skill or technique multiple times. This week, we have been focusing on self-portraits by drawing different face and eye shapes.
2 weeks to go! I know we have a lot of tired children so please have a restful weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 30th September
This week, the value we were focusing on was responsibility. These children have taken responsibility for their learning and behaviour and I am so proud of them. In worship, we discussed the WOWs in life and how amazing things have happened to us that make us want to burst. The children came up with some brilliant examples of the amazing things that have happened in their lives.
In maths, we have continued to focus on numbers to 20 by looking at numbers which are more/less and putting the numbers in the correct order. We have started counting backwards and forwards to 30 and noticing the pattern in the numbers.
In phonics, we have already learnt so many new sounds and the children are loving our new phonics scheme. This week, we have learnt ‘oy’ (a boy cries ahoy!), ‘ir’ (a quirky shirt), ‘ue’ (true, the sky is blue) and ‘aw’ (a fawn on the lawn). I wonder if the children can spot any of these new sounds when they are reading.
In RE, we have been thinking about what Christians would thank God for. The children thought Christians would say thank you to God for making all of the animals because we get to learn about them. Next week, we will be thinking about how the Harvest Festival and how Christians celebrate this event.
This week, we have completed our first computing lesson! The children were very excited to find lots of different technology around our school. We also talked about being using technology responsibly and the children came up with some brilliant ways to keep ourselves safe online.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the church, on Monday, for our Harvest Service.
Have a lovely weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 23rd September
Wow, what a week! Fitting five days into four is not easy but the children have breezed it.
We had a wonderful discussion on Tuesday about the Queen, her reign, and the state funeral. What a moment in history for these little ones. They have a brilliant understanding of our Queen and all the things she did. Also, some really thoughtful questions.
Literacy has been all about CAPITAL LETTERS. We have found out that we use capital letters in so many different ways e.g., our names, the days of the week and the pronoun ‘I’. The children have continued to practise writing full sentences with capital letters, full stops, and fingers spaces. Every morning, we practise a different letter formation, and it is clear to see the children using these formations in their writing.
We now know ‘The Gingerbread Man’ story off-by-heart, so please ask the children to re-tell the story to you, using the actions we have learnt in school.
In PSHE, we talked about all the wonderful feelings we have. The children identified a trusted adult that they knew they could talk to, if they needed to.
Our Geography focus for this term is, ‘Where do we live?’. We have started by looking closely at the environment around us. The children have recognised that the canal, very tall trees and beautiful flowers surround our wonderful school. This week, we used the fable ‘The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse’ to help us explore the differences between a town and a countryside.
In PE, we revisited our fundamental movement skills that we had learnt last week. However, this week, we had the privilege of being taught by a professional basketball coach. The children were brilliant at bouncing the balls (using their fingertips) and controlling which direction they turned.
Another jam-packed week and I’m sure lots of tired children!
Enjoy your weekend.
Miss Williams
Friday 16th September
Well, what a busy week. It feels like we have been back at school for months.
Thank you to everyone who managed to attend the Meet the Teacher. I hope you found the session helpful but please come and ask if you have any queries.
This week in maths, we have begun our Number and Place Value unit. We started by counting backwards and forwards to and from 20. We then moved onto representing numbers 0 – 20 using a tens frame. The children were brilliant at knowing if we had already filled one tens frame then we have represented 10. Finally, we have started to explore these numbers on a number line. This is a little bit trickier when the number line only has the number 0, 10 and 20 showing.
In Literacy, we have started re-telling our core text ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Using our core text has enabled the children to explore the story by writing their own sentences. I cannot believe how much progress they have made this week, in writing. We have been focusing on using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and a full stop at the end, writing on the line and using finger spaces between the words.
On Monday, we all investigated our science lab to answer the question “What is Science?” The children thoroughly enjoyed working out what each area represented using the clues on the table. We found out that this term, we will be exploring different materials. The children are already very good at describing what something is made of e.g., wood, paper, and fabric.
This week, we started our RE unit ‘Who do Christians say made the world?’. The children were able to share their thoughts on this question. We then read the Creation story, from our very own bibles, (the children loved having their own bible, with their own name on it) and tried to sequence the story by using pictures.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the extra day together!
Miss Williams
Friday 9th September
Welcome to Year 1 and what a pleasure it has been to spend one whole week with these little ones. They have all been amazing. We have settled back into school life like we never left!
Our morning routine is slick and organised. The children come into the classroom brilliantly; they are able to put all of their things away and get on with their morning work, independently.
This week, we have completed a few maths and phonics assessments. We have written in our Literacy books for the first time (this is a big deal!), completed a Geography activity and decided on our classroom rules.
The children have shown all of our school values this week but I wanted to pick one out especially, ‘compassion’. These children are so kind and caring to one another and it has been wonderful to see. So many times, this week I have heard children say, “are you ok?”, “would you like me to help you?”
You should be incredibly proud of how far they have come in one week! I am so excited to see how much they can achieve this year!
As you have seen, your child has three books to read a week. Reading is vital in everything we do, so I would encourage you to share these books with your child, every day!
We have our Meet the Teacher session on Monday @ 2.50 pm – I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.
As always, please ask if you have any queries.
Have a wonderful weekend!
