We can’t believe how quickly this term is flying by! Year 6 have made an absolutely tremendous start and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and enthusiasm. They’ve dived headfirst into every challenge with smiles and determination.

In Maths, we’ve been tackling the tricky world of proportions, and it’s been fantastic to see them using their problem-solving skills to master this important concept. From scaling recipes to understanding ratios, they’ve shown real dedication.

English has seen us embark on our exciting narrative unit, where we’re delving deep into the powerful and moving book, ‘Can You See Me?’ by Rebecca Westcott and Libby Scott. We’re exploring the characters, themes, and writing techniques, and we’re already seeing some brilliant narrative descriptions emerging from the class.

The creativity doesn’t stop there! In Music, after a fantastic term exploring improvisation, we’ve moved onto composition. The children are now crafting their own unique musical pieces, and it’s been a joy to hear them experimenting with different sounds and rhythms. Even better, they’ve started sharing their compositions with each other, playing and listening to each other’s masterpieces! It’s been a real treat to witness their musical talents blossoming.

We’re so excited to see what the rest of the term brings. Keep up the amazing work, Year 6!

We’ve been channeling our inner artists this term, exploring the art of still life painting. We started by carefully observing different fruits, noticing their unique shapes, colours and textures. Then, we learned about shading and blending techniques to bring the fruit to life and we have created some amazing pieces – it was wonderful to see everyone’s creativity flowing!

In PE, we’ve continued to develop our football skills on Fridays, and have also been developing our gymnastics skills on Tuesdays, focusing on floor work. We learned how to perform basic movements like forward rolls, cartwheels and balances with precision and grace. Now, we’re starting to put together simple routines, linking our movements together to create a flowing sequence.

In writing, we’ve been exploring the power of language to create different tones. We learned about the passive voice and how it can be used to make our writing sound more formal. This week, we’ve been using this technique to write discussion pieces on a very important topic: Should animals be used for human gain? This is a complex issue with many different viewpoints, and we’ve been encouraged to think critically and express our opinions respectfully. We have been challenged to consider the ethical implications of animal use in areas such as scientific research, food production and entertainment.

Year 6 have had a fantastic start to the term! We have been busy exploring some exciting topics across our curriculum.

In Science, we’ve delved into the fascinating world of the circulatory system. We’ve learned all about the vital role of blood, discovering its different components and how it travels around our bodies. We’ve also explored the structure and function of the heart, exploring its structure, and how it tirelessly pumps blood throughout our bodies.

Over in Maths, we’ve been putting our problem-solving skills to the test by mastering the order of operations (BIDMAS). We’ve learned how to correctly solve complex equations by following the specific rules of brackets, indices, division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction.

For Literacy, we’ve embarked on a thrilling reading journey with “Pig-Heart Boy” by Malorie Blackman. This thought-provoking novel has sparked some fantastic discussions about organ donation and the ethical dilemmas surrounding medical advancements. We’ve also begun exploring the art of writing a balanced discussion, starting with the challenging question: “Should Cam (the lead character) have the pig’s heart transplant?”

We’re all looking forward to continuing our learning journey and discovering even more exciting things in the weeks to come!

Year 6 have been immersing themselves in WWII life through studying Goodnight Mr Tom and learning all about the Blitz, it’s significance and why it was remembered. When we visited St James’ Church for the Harvest Experience, we took the opportunity to research information on soldiers who were lost in battle in WWII to help us with our lesson on how Quedgeley was affected by the War.

Children have been exploring, reciting and performing poetry with the theme of how our own voices count, by reading Your Voice Counts by Alina Brdar. We then reflected on what counts to us, and how we can use our voice for good.

In maths, the children have approached their learning around long division brilliantly with all of our learning powers at the forefront of their practise. As a result, the children have meticulously calculated using jottings, multiple workings and can calculate answers that are whole, have a whole-number remainder and express the remainder as a fraction.

In science, we have been considering how shadows prove that light cannot bend. We have made our own predictions about the shape and size of shadows when obstructing the light beams with opaque objects and this week are going to be exploring how light reflects by seeing objects that are behind our backs!

The children have had a phenomenal start to Year 6! Over the past few weeks, the children have settled really well and got stuck in to Year 6 life brilliantly.

We have started the year studying WWII in history – with a focus on the Blitz. This is complemented by our class reading text ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’, through which children follow the experience of a young and vulnerable evacuee. The children have shown great interest in all aspects of life for Britons during WWII and this detail is really shining through in their writing when exploring perspectives of characters from the book.

In science, we have started to learn all about light and so far the children have been learning about how light travels and how a light source helps us to see.

In RE, the children have deepened their understanding of Hinduism by studying the enquiry ‘Why do Hindus want to be good?’ They have leaned on previous learning from Year 4 on Hinduism (concepts of Brahman, atman and the Trimurti) to now unpick and explore more complex concepts such as samara, karma and dharma.

This term’s focus in PE is rugby and the children have honed their passing and receiving and are now confidently generating lines of passing while moving forward. The children are really developing their communication within drill and game situations, which has notably improved the flow of their practice.

Keep up the great work Year 6!
